5th Gosport Leader awarded Queens Sword

The Queen’s Sword is awarded by H.M. the Queen each year, to the best all-round Cadet on passing out of the Training Establishment Britannia. It is open to all Cadets of all branches (Executive, Engineering, Supply and Electrical).

This year it was awarded to Lieutenant P E Whiteley RN on May 1st 2014 by General Sir Richard Barrons on behalf of the Lord High Admiral, HRH the Duke of Edinburgh, at the Royal Naval College Britannia, Dartmouth.

Peter with General Sir Richard Barrons.

Peter was a Sea Scout with Group and has continued his association with the 5th as a Leader. He has just completed the first stage of his submarine training on board HMS Triumph and has been awarded his Dolphins. He has been promoted to Lieutenant and will now undergo a year of advanced training centred on nuclear engineering, based back at HMS Sultan. He will be back helping with the 5th (minus the sword - however tempting it might be to play at being a pirate when the 5th takes to the water...).

Bar to the Award of Merit

From left - Len Norster, Bill Hyde, Val Hyde, Barry Martin.

Members of the Group plus friends from around the District gathered at Headquarters to witness Ian Batchelor, District Commissioner, present Bill Hyde with the Bar to the Medal of Merit.

Bill became involved with the Group when his son Brian joined as a Cub. Along with Barry Martin and others Bill built the present Headquarters, Mountbatten Hall, which opened in 1980.

Bill has been a staunch supporter of the Group for over thirty six years serving as Committee Member, Maintenance Man, Fundraiser and much more.

Scouts from the Troop help out with a Creek Clean

Two Scouts from the 5th took part in a Creek Clean, organised by Councillor June Culley's Waterway's Group. It's amazing how much rubbish you can get out of Haslar Lake in just a couple of hours, and we're told that this trolley-full was just part of it!

Retirement of Phil Sandall

To mark the retirement of Phil Sandall from active Scouting, the Group presented him with a picture to remind him of his time with us. Phil was appointed Assistant Scout Leader in January 2001 and has been a stalwart of the Group ever since. He was Group Scout Leader from 2003 to 2004 and again Assistant Scout Leader for the last ten years. He has done sterling work administering the Troop Activity Badge programme, earning a reputation of a tough but fair arbiter of the Associations badge criteria. Many Scouts have achieved a huge selection of Activity Badges under his stewardship, not so long ago someone was heard to say that "if you get a badge from Phil, you know you've earned it".

Phil and James

Phil's last official act was to present the Chief Scouts Gold Award to James Potter. Like so many Scouts before him, James was mentored and coached by Phil in the requirements for this top award in the Scout section.
