Can you help the Beaver Scout Colony?

The Beaver Scout section is thriving, however we are in need of more adult helpers, this can be a occasional helper for when we are out and about, an occasional helper at our normal meetings when you are able to attend or when we need extra support, this could be you willing to give being an assistant leader a go and rocking the stunning blue shirt, we could try and set up a parent rota or a list of parent names who are willing to help and which type of help you are willing to give. If you think you could be that amazing person we are looking for please do get in touch ?? Or even if you know of anyone over the age of 18 who is interested in volunteering with young people please do spread the word.

Royal Navy Inspection

Our Royal Navy inspection takes place on Friday, 10th March.

Scouts to arrive by 18:40 so we can get prepared for our RN Inspection with evening finishing at 21:15. The meeting is slightly longer than usual to enable the programme of activities needed over the evening and please note full and clean uniform is required. Our RN Inspection normally takes place every two years and involves an officer of the Royal Navy attending a meeting with us to assess that we meet the required standards and criteria for Royal Navy Sea Scout Group Recognition, without which the Group will lose out both financially and also our access to the HMS Bristol camps, RN swimming gala etc.

Akela has arranged for some senior Cub Scouts to join in for the evening; unfortunately with numbers involved and the size of Hall we have not been able to extended the invitation to Beaver Scouts.

Hopefully the next inspection may be closer to the boating season and we can get all Sections there.

We’re taking part in Sainsbury’s Active Kids 2017

We’re taking part in Sainsbury’s Active Kids 2017. And this means that from 25 January – 2 May, please collect vouchers at Sainsbury’s and donate them to us by 30 June. We can then exchange them for new cooking and sports equipment, and experiences for our younger members.

How to collect vouchers: 25 January – 2 May

In Sainsbury’s Local Stores, you’ll get one voucher for every £5 you spend. Every time you shop at a Sainsbury’s Supermarket, you’ll be given one voucher for every £10 you spend at the till. Or online at sainsburys.co.uk, you’ll still receive the equivalent of one voucher for every £10 you spend, but they’ll all be printed on one piece of paper up to the value of 50 vouchers – so make sure you keep it safe.

How to donate vouchers

Simply bring your vouchers into the 5th Gosport Scout HQ and drop them in our collection box, which you’ll find in the hall. We’ll need all your voucher donations by 30 June. We were able to select a few items that the Beavers could use for when they do some gardening but we want to be able to help all of the children with new sports items.

Spread the word

Active Kids is a great way for our community to join together to help our kids eat well, move well and live well. So ask all of your neighbours, friends and family to help collect vouchers too.

If you’ve got any questions about Active Kids, just ask any Leader, Committee Member or email at treasurer@5thgosportseascouts.org.uk

Gosport District Camp Beaver Fun Day at Lyons Copse

Gosport District Camp Beaver Fun Day at Lyons Copse, Shedfield takes place on Saturday 6th May.

This is a fun filled day with great activities including Climbing, Archery, Laser Guns and a variety of inflatable’s plus lots more.

The cost is £12 per head including embroidered T-Shirt, 1 lunch, a full day of activities and evening campfire, the day runs from 08:30 – 21:00. However if your your Beaver is not staying for the campfire they can be picked up when the main day activities have finished (time to be confirmed, approx. 17:00). Parents can also arrive at this time and stay with their Beaver until after the campfire. We are still in discussions about food being provided in the evening (for those who are staying for the campfire) for a small additional cost. There is a theme this year of "Disney".

T-Shirts: Child Sizes: 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, 9-11, 12-13, 14-15, please, please, please pay the (non-refunable) deposit of £5 with required T-shirt size by Tuesday 2nd February, making cheques payable to Gosport District Scout Council (GDSC). Although payment of the whole £12 is very much appreciated, if only paying deposit need remainder of the money by Tuesday 21st February.

We are in need of adult helpers for the camp funday which involves being with one of us and going round all the activities with a group of Beavers, it is a large site and there is a fair amount of walking and standing around but is great fun to watch the Beavers enjoying themselves and often doing things for the first time. You will need to have completed a Scouting DBS which is pretty painless and we will provide you with that. If we get no helpers unfortunately we will need to restrict the number of Beavers who are able to attend.

If you have issues with transport please do post on the Group Facebook page, as somebody else may be able to provide a lift.

Will give out more kit details nearer the time, any questions please do email Mole.

Please sponsor Akela for the Three Peaks Challenge

Trevor Smith, Akela of our Cub Scout Pack, is undertaking the Three Peaks Challenge with a team of colleagues from his workplace (Taylor Made Computer Solutions) in September 2017 for their nominated charity, the Wessex Cancer Trust.

The Three Peaks Challenge involves climbing the three highest peaks in England, Wales and Scotland within 24hours.

The three mountains are:

  • Snowdon, in Wales (1085m)
  • Scafell Pike, in England (978m)

The team aim to raise £15,000 for the Wessex Cancer Trust to help children, teenagers and adults in the Wessex area who are living with cancer and make their lives and those of their families better at a time most needed. Your kindness and support over the coming months will help them to continue to reach those most in need.

  4. Pico / dinghy maintenance - these need a check and some repairs are needed;

Collecting Scouts from Troop meetings

Even though it's only September, the evenings are drawing in and parents are requested to collect their Scouts from the main hall at Headquarters rather than waiting outside. While we appreciate that this may be inconvenient we hope that you will agree that it is a sensible safety precaution.

Related to this please do not park on the paved area directly in front of the Headquarters building. We're not sure why this area is becoming uneven so we're trying to keep vehicles off of it as a precautionary measure.

Latest Troop programme published

Nathan has published the latest Troop programme, Scouts will begin again as of the 9th of September and this term we have a variety of new activities different to those we have run before. Please note that some of September’s evenings include:

  • 09/09/16 – Welcome back evening, full uniform.
  • 16/09/16 – Water evening at Stoke Lake. Joint event with 3rd Gosport
  • 19/09/16 – Flaming Catapults at Portchester Castle. Joint evening with 2nd Portchester
  • 23/09/16 – Wide Game at Stokes Bay
  • 30/09/16 – Water evening at Stoke Lake

Following on from the AGM, subs will now preferably be collected via the OSM Payments system we use. For those who didn’t attend the AGM, due to increased running costs we have had to increase our subs from £38 a term to £42. This increase will allow us to focus our fundraising activities into providing a wider range of activities and new equipment rather than funding the upkeep of the building.

Nathan has created a schedule within OSM for monthly payments. These will consist of 3 payments at £10 and a final instalment of £12 per term all taken on the last working day of the month. Should you wish to pay in a single termly instalment or the annual figure, there is the option on the payment page to “pay now”. You can pay as many instalments in one go as you would like.

For those of you who have already signed up to the original schedule, this has now been amended to the above. Please revisit OSM to ensure you are happy with the new payment schedule.

Another reminder of our upcoming Christmas party. This year we have booked to use the main pool at Gosport Leisure Centre on the 17th of December. Cost for this evening is £13 per person and includes an evening meal. Further details can be found on OSM.

Use of Online Scout Manager for Troop payments

As discussed at the Annual General Meeting, as of September the 5th Troop will be utilising online payments for camps and subscriptions in a bid to streamline the administration process.

The Troop have schedules created for Subscriptions on a termly basis. When logged in parents/guardians can choose to either pay this in a lump sum or create direct debits on a preferred date and of a preferred value. This means that with Subscriptions at £42 a term users choose to set up a Direct Debit of an amount per month rather than pay the full sum in one go.

The payment portal is available here.

The Group anticipate that other sections will follow the Troop lead in due course.
