5th Gosport Sea Scout Aaron Attends Commissioning Ceremony For HMS Queen Elizabeth – Britain’s largest warship

5th Gosport Sea Scout Group Aaron was selected as one of four young people out of 105 RN Recognised Sea Scout Groups around the country to represent RN Sea Scouting at the Commissioning Ceremony of HMS Queen Elizabeth – Britain’s largest warship.

Aaron, selected by virtue of his commitment to RN Sea Scouting, his personal achievements in sea scouting and his involvement with local sailing partnerships, was involved in the preparation of the ceremony and formed the Honour Guard at the entrance to the hangar deck through which Her Majesty arrived.

Following proceedings, during which they welcomed Britain’s new £3.1 billion aircraft carrier into the Fleet, Aaron and the other Scout and Explorers were interviewed by the 1st Sea Lord, Admiral Sir Philip Jones RN and the Captain of HMS Queen Elizabeth, Commodore Jerry Kyd RN.

Accompanied by Princess Anne in Naval uniform, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth attended the Commissioning Ceremony in Portsmouth for her namesake ship, HMS Queen Elizabeth, the largest and most powerful vessel ever built for the Royal Navy was brought into service.

Photographs from the event are in The Gallery.

News from the Scout Troop

This week’s scouts will be a mixture of energetic activities before the half term break. As there will be a lot of running around, please turn up in non-uniform with sensible shoes.

Nathan also thanks all of you who have been bringing bricks in. We’ve already nearly achieved a pile of 50 and have over 30 blocks meaning we’re well on our way to the target. At this rate, we’ll be able to start digging our fire pits during November ready for the new year and a possible survival camp weekend at the HQ.

Please sponsor Bear to raise money for Cancer Research

James Elborn, better known to most in the Group as "Bear", is raising money for Cancer Research by having his body waxed from the neck down to just below his belt buckle. The event takes place at the Hoeford Inn on 27 October at 9:00 pm. If you would like to sponsor him please send him an email by clicking here or see him at a Beaver Colony meeting. If you would like to support him at the event he will be delighted to see you there.

News from the Scout Troop

As part of our upcoming winter programme, over the next couple of months we will be digging three new fire pits within the compound. This will allow us to practice a greater variety of fire lighting skills and to increase the number of fires that we can light.

To assist with this we will be launching the Scout Brick Challenge. Roughly 750 bricks are needed for us to complete this project, of which the scouts will spend an evening before Christmas attempting to make bricks. However, we will also be asking for scouts to try and bring in any spare/old bricks that they can find. If every Scout brought in 5 bricks, we would already be 1/3 of the way to our target.

News from the Scout Troop

Firstly a huge congratulations to the Emlyn Camping Competition team who over the weekend have won the County level competition.

This competition involved the team running their own campsite including maintaining and cooking over an open fire and a number of other challenges. Not only did they win the overall competition but the team also picked up the pioneering, cooking and Easter egg hunt (team leadership challenge) awards.

A team photo is in The Gallery.

Over the weekend of the 28th and 29th of October the District hiking competition is being held from Lyons Copse. Should anyone like to take part, can they please let Nathan know after flag break at the beginning of Friday’s scouts. These scouts will then spend the next two weeks preparing for the competition.

Also a reminder that the behaviour policy forms and personal detail sheets were due back last week. Please ensure that these are signed and handed back in this week so we can update our records. Copies are available by clicking on the hyperlinks.

Latest news from the Scout Troop

Nathan has published the latest update to the Scout programme.

After over 10 years as Scout Leader (SL) Allan has stepped down from this role, taking on the position of AGSL (Assistant Group Scout Leader). This new position will see Allan working alongside Mike Brown our existing GSL to supervise all three sections and to help steer the group as part of our long-term plan.

I would like to thank Allan for all the hours he has put in over this time and his dedication to running a Group which under his guidance has seen us become one of the largest and most successful within the district.

This is not the last we will be seeing of Allan as he still plans on attending Scouts within his new position and under his activity instructor role.

As of September, I will be stepping into the SL role. Other than a different leader standing at the front for flag, the scouts shouldn’t notice many differences to their Friday sessions. Alex, Helen, Josh, Pete and Robynne will remain as leaders, whilst Allan, Richard and Chris cover our activity instructor roles.

In addition to this, due to upcoming data protection legislation changes and some simplifying of our records we will be rolling out a new welcome pack and behaviour policy during the first session in September. We ask that these are signed and returned to the leaders by the 29th of September at the latest.

Our current proposed programme for September is as per the below:

  • 08/09/17 – Welcome back after summer, map skills and create a code of conduct – 5th HQ;
  • 15/09/17 – Boating Session – Alverstoke Lake;
  • 22/09/17 – Evening Hike – Start at Hill Head Sailing Club – 18:50 drop off / 21:15 collection. Please bring a rucksack with a drink and any snacks you may need;
  • 29/09/17 - Boating Session – Alverstoke Lake.

Also a reminder, can you please update your emergency contact details through this link.

If you do not already have a MyScout login please follow this link to create one. MyScout allows parents/guardians to view upcoming events, payments and badge badgework progress.
